Carrie L. Larson Hoquiam, Washington
paper, thread 5¼ x 65/8 x 1½ closed; 5¼ x 13 x 1½ open © 2010 $220 This piece began with the images—photographs that suggested hidden forms and implied damage, as well as the tensions surrounding humanity’s attempt to control the natural world. The poem developed using those broad ideas as a springboard, while turning to an intimate examination of an adulterous relationship set against one particular storm-ravaged night. I paired words and images so that each informed the other, binding the book in a fashion that would hint at concealment, even as it reveals detail and narrative. Epson-printed images and text; Yotsume Toji binding with hinge-fold cover. Photographs and original poem by the author. Carrie Larson continues to hone her visual art skills since graduating from Whitman College in 1993. A love affair with the written word led to book arts as a means of expression. She currently lives in Hoquiam, Washington, and eagerly anticipates a residency at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology this spring. |
